Peat bogs
Around Weert there used to be several small peat bogs, known as "Peelen," which were digged up or landed over time. The area south of Weert used to consist of forests, heathlands, marshes and shifting sands. As early as the Middle Ages, people began clearing these wastelands. Overgrazing created shifting dunes. After 1850 these areas were also reclaimed.

You can start the route from numbered junction 77, located at the Grote IJzeren Man. The cycle route goes around Altweerterheide, once an inaccessible area. On the way you pass two "Peelen": the Kruispeel and Moeselpeel.
