Cycle route

The cycling route Between Dragons and Norsemen takes you on a 35-kilometre journey through the countryside between Asselt and Beesel, where legends and history intertwine. Along the way, you'll pass places that tell stories of bravery, raids, and a village that keeps its past alive.

Beesel: the village of the Dragon

In Beesel, you’ll see references to the legend of Saint George and the Dragon in street art, greenery and facades. This is not just folklore for show – every seven years, the entire village transforms into a stage full of fire, symbolism and cooperation. The eternal battle between good and evil is still alive here.

Asselt: where the Norsemen came ashore

In the year 881, Norsemen landed in the church village of Asselt. Led by Danish prince Godfrid, they built a strategic fortress and launched raids on churches and cities in the region. What now appears as a peaceful village along the Meuse was once a centre of fear and power struggle.

Along the route, you’ll find audio points that share the story of the Pact of Asselt and the traces that time has left in the landscape and imagination.
