The appetite of the large grazers ensures that the moor remains open. Natuurmonumenten also wants to create more heathland. This is good for the nightjar, a rare species that has been breeding in the Laura forests for several years.
The Laurabossen owe their name to the Laura mine in South Limburg (NL). Around 1900 the drifting dune area was planted with Scots pines. The forest provided wood for the undergrowth of mine galleries. However, these uniform forests are not attractive to most animals and are now gradually being transformed into a varied oak-birch forest.
