Walking/hiking routes

Length: 7 km. Walk through former marshy land.

This walk starts at hotel-restaurant de Abdij on Kerkpad. Horn was an independent municipality until 1991, then part of the municipality of Haelen and now, since 2007, part of the municipality of Leudal. The name Horn, and its alternative spellings Horne, Hurnen and Hornin, derive from the Germanic Hornjôn, meaning "hill or corner in a marshy land". The river Maas was the natural border between Horn and nearby Roermond.

Mills De Hoop and De Welvaart
The walking tour introduces you to all the interesting facts of the village of Horn. You will pass beautiful cultural objects such as the windmill 'De Welvaart' and the windmill 'De Hoop', along Horn Castle and through beautiful nature and cosy streets. Windmill 'De Hoop' in Horn is the only sixteen-sided windmill in Europe and was thoroughly refurbished in 2009. 'De Hoop' was built in 1817 and is one of the few mills in Limburg that, together with 'De Welvaart' from 1865, survived the war without serious damage. Horn Castle is one of the oldest intact medieval ring-wall castles in the Netherlands. The castle is built on a natural elevation at the river Maas.
