Unique raised bog vegetation
Thanks to a saucer-shaped loam layer just below the surface, the high water level in the Tuspeel is maintained. Peat has formed in this lowland over the centuries, but the peat has never been extracted as peat. As a result, a unique raised bog vegetation has been preserved. In the peat are some pools with floating pondweed and water sedge, where the little green frog and two species of salamanders breed. In addition, more than ten species of dragonflies have been observed and several butterfly species occur.
Surrounding the bog core are high shifting dunes planted with Scots pine and American oak. Here the great spotted woodpecker and green woodpecker breed. On the dry parts of the area, a small herd of horses graze year-round, which keeps the area from becoming overgrown with birch forest.
