Bouxweerd

Recreational water

The Boux Weerd nature reserve lies to the east of Buggenum. This whole area was used as grassland until gravel extraction started here. In 1952, the bend in a much larger Maasuiterwaard was cut off, as a result of which part of this Weerd then came to lie east of the Maas.

Bouxweerd consists of two sub-areas. Firstly, a shallow pond surrounded by grassland and willow forest. And secondly, a seepage zone with alder groves and grasslands. Besides being a sandy beach, Bouxweerd is also known as a skating location.

This area is home to 14 species of dragonflies and breeding birds, among other things. Because there are several species of birds in this area, a bird observation wall has been placed overlooking the lake. It is definitely worth visiting. In the winter months, ducks are observed in this lake and geese in the meadow. In the spring and autumn, when the water level is low, you can see waders, such as hawks and plovers. Next to this lake is a nice walking route of 9 km. If you are more of a cyclist, there are also two cycle routes that pass here. The Molen bicycle route North Leudal of 42 km and the Leudal south bicycle route 41 km.
