Walking/hiking routes

Length: 13 km. The Knopen Lopen walking route in and around Horn takes you past several places of cultural interest and through areas of natural beauty.

Horn, in the local dialect Häör, seems to be derived from the Germanic Hornjôn, which indicates a higher situated spot in a swampy area. The village of Horn has a rich history. Already before the year 1000 there was a parish of Horn. The village gave its name to the former county of Horn.

This walking route can be followed via the KnopenLopen network of the Leudal municipality. The route starts at the information board at the Raadhuisplein, along the entrance to Hotel-Restaurant De Abdij. Via Kerkstraat you walk to junction 55 and cross the busy Rijksweg.

In the hamlet of Beurik, you can see some beautiful farmhouses. The Casquettenhof, which was built in 1788, is a square farm where a dairy farm is run. It also serves as a care farm for the elderly.

Horn has a train station, as suggested by the decoration of a front garden a little further on. A former ProRail employee might live here?

After crossing the road to Beegden, one arrives in a residential area with lots of greenery and pretty little houses, in a coniferous forest. A couple of snapping ducks welcome you from a pond in this forest. In the woods along Bergerweg you pass the Lataste school, a school for children who need a little extra support, and Sint Ursula comprehensive school, a school for VMBO, HAVO and VWO.

Horn has grown considerably in the course of several decades. This is evident from, among other things, the location of windmills De Welvaart and De Hoop. These mills were built on a spot where they could catch the wind unhindered, but now stand between the houses.

The several decades old extension of Horn that is crossed further on in this route is called "Kloppeven". Due to a lack of maintenance, this pond has almost completely grown over in some places. Blatting sheep welcome you to the surprisingly beautiful nature reserve Het Broek. In this small, quiet oasis, you may come face to face with a fox, a roe deer or a badger.

Via fields on the eastern side of the village, you return to the centre of Horn. Between the greenery on the right is Horn Castle. A walk through the castle park is very worthwhile. On leaving the castle park you return to your starting point.
