Liberation Route
Audiospots
The Liberation Route brings the history of 1944 and 1945 to life. In Limburg, special Liberation Route audiospots have been set up in more than 20 places, recognisable by large Maas boulders in the landscape. At each stone, you can listen to a radio play. In these short stories, you can hear what people experienced in the last years of the war. Sometimes they are personal memories, sometimes events that affected the whole area.
On this page, you will find an overview of all audiospots in Limburg. A special way to reflect on the past - just on the road, in nature.
To reflect on the past
The story of our freedom
Liberation Route Europe is an international commemorative route linking key sites in modern European history. The route follows the path of the Allied advance and brings to life stories from the period surrounding the liberation of Europe in World War II.
The liberation of Limburg
In September 1944, the first Allied troops entered Limburg. This made Limburg the first province of the Netherlands to be liberated. Nevertheless, part of the province remained occupied until 1945. Early that year, Operation Grenade, a major military action to liberate the area west of the Rhine, started from Limburg. This operation was an important preparation for the crossing of the Rhine and the further liberation of Europe.
