Moesel
The name "Moesel" is derived from "moeëst," meaning swamp. The former hamlet of Moesel, now an urban neighborhood, takes its name from this distinctive swamp area.
Despite numerous drainage ditches constructed in the early 20th century, it proved impossible to reclaim the entire area for agricultural purposes. Persistent groundwater flow (seepage) and rainwater made the area inaccessible and too wet. In the 1990s, severe desiccation led to water from surrounding agricultural areas being diverted and drainage ditches being dammed. These measures allowed the Moeselpeel to slowly recover, with even a renewed formation of raised bog.
Quiet area
The heart of the Moeselpeel is now an inaccessible quiet area, surrounded by overgrown reed marshes and a belt of willow and alder thickets. By maintaining the water level and periodically mowing the reeds, the encroachment of the reed marsh is effectively inhibited. This unique area near Weert now provides a perfect refuge for diverse flora and fauna, where water and silence reign.
