The Weerterbos
The Weerterbos has recently attracted attention because of the presence of red deer, especially during the fall when they attract people hoping to catch a glimpse of the rutting season. But you soon discover that the Weerterbos has much more to offer than just these animals. The area includes a rich variety of old, damp deciduous forest, fens and small areas of heathland.
You first explore the edge of the Weerterbos before crossing the vast agricultural area. Fascinating developments are taking place here, as the Weerterbos is being transformed into a climate buffer. The marshes in this area can capture water during floods and gradually release it in times of drought. During the walk across the Laarderheide, where the brown route takes you, a water collection basin will be realized.
The walk takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The landscape varies from deciduous and coniferous forests to fields and meadows, without much hilly terrain, making it ideal for beginners.
