The walk of about 12 km starts at VVV Thorn and runs via the walking junction system. There are 3 different catering locations where you can take a break for a snack. The walk starts in the White town of Thorn, the history of this town goes back to the 10th century. Founded in 975 as a Benedictine monastery, Thorn developed from the 12th century into a miniature principality, under the leadership of an abbess and highly noble monks. This came to an end with the arrival of the French in 1794. The French introduced a tax based on the size of the windows, of which the buildings in Thorn counted a large number. The poor population could not afford the tax and bricked up the windows. They decided to hide these building traces, the 'scars of poverty', under a layer of whitewash. The white town was born with this.
The route then goes to Wessem, also situated on the Meuse. In the 12th century Wessem received city rights, but it was not until the 17th century that shipping and local trade flourished. The market square of medieval origin, the monumental houses and the rebuilt St. Medardus church are well worth a visit.
You walk back along the floodplains of the Meuse. The last break takes place in the white town of Thorn.
Groups of 8 persons or more must - due to reservation of seats - reserve this arrangement in advance.
The Hap & Stap can be walked from Wednesday to Sunday, between 12.00-18.00 hrs. You pay €11.95 per person. You will receive a clear route description and 3 vouchers, each entitling you to a snack. The route is for sale at VVV Thorn, Wijngaard 14, or via the webshop.
