Cross-border nature hike
The Meinvennen route lets you explore the unique landscape of De Meinweg. You walk through dry forests, wet fens and sweet gale thickets. The terraced terrain was formed by centuries of erosion in the Meuse valley. Along the way, you pass the Rode Beek and Boschbeek streams, which flow into the Roer.
Landscape with elevation
The trail runs through the natural areas Luzekamp, Melickerven and Herkenboscherven. Here, dry grasslands, moist heathlands and inland dunes alternate. Due to steep transitions and varied terrain, the route has a sporty character. You also cross the former railway line ‘IJzeren Rijn’ twice.
Nature in every season
This diverse landscape is home to many animal species. You may encounter Scottish Highland cattle or Icelandic ponies, but also dragonflies, amphibians and with some luck, an adder. In spring, you might hear the woodlark or nightjar. Foxes, weasels and wild boar also live in this area.
Be prepared for the trail
The route includes steep sections and unpaved paths. Sturdy hiking boots are essential, especially in wet conditions. Due to the relief and distance, a good level of fitness is recommended.
